How the estimates are made

  • Electricity usage (kWh): Assumed monthly usage, anchored on HECO's 500 kWh 'typical residential customer' benchmark and scaled up or down by household size. Your use depends on A/C, EV charging, water heater, and rooftop solar.
  • Kauaʻi electricity: KIUC reported an average rate of 40¢/kWh for August 2026 (board minutes). Applied as a flat rate plus the Schedule D customer charge ($11.42). Actual residential bills vary by month with fuel costs.
  • Water use: EPA WaterSense: the average American uses about 82 gallons a day at home (82 × 30.4 days ≈ 2,494 gal/month per person).
  • Water/sewer dwelling type: Renters are modeled at multi-unit (condo/apartment) rates and owners at single-family rates. Many Oʻahu rentals and condos include water and sewer in rent or HOA dues.
  • Water/sewer off Oʻahu: Oʻahu rates (Board of Water Supply + City sewer). Used as a proxy for the other islands, which have their own county water departments.
  • Groceries: USDA Thrifty Food Plan cost for Hawaiʻi (Aug 2026, reference family of four) ÷ 4 × household size. The Thrifty plan is USDA's lowest-cost plan (all meals cooked at home), so most households spend more. Statewide figure based on Honolulu prices.
  • Gasoline: BLS CE 2024: avg U.S. household spent $2,411/yr on gasoline with 1.9 vehicles; ÷ EIA 2024 avg regular price $3.304/gal ≈ 384 gal per vehicle per year ≈ 32 gal/month. Island driving is often shorter, so this may run high.
  • Car insurance: Insure.com 2026 average full-coverage premium for Hawaiʻi (40-year-old, clean record). Private rate survey; your quote will vary.
  • Bus pass: No-car households: TheBus adult monthly pass ($90 from July 1, 2026) for up to 2 adults. Neighbor islands have their own county bus systems; the Oʻahu price is used as a placeholder there.
  • Health care: BLS CE 2024 average healthcare spending ($6,197/yr per household of 2.4 people: premiums, medical services, drugs, supplies) per person × MERIC Hawaiʻi health index 103.0. Many Hawaiʻi workers get employer coverage under the Prepaid Health Care Act, so your own out-of-pocket cost may be lower.
  • Phone: BLS CE 2024 cellular phone service ≈ $1,359/yr per household ÷ 2.4 people ÷ 12. National figure, not Hawaiʻi-specific; the $1,359 line item should be re-checked against the BLS detailed table.
  • Shipping premium: Shipped-goods premium. BLS CE 2024 household spending on apparel ($2,001) + household furnishings & equipment ($2,414) + housekeeping supplies ($877) = $5,292/yr, × 24.5% (MERIC Hawaiʻi misc. goods & services index 124.5 vs 100). Scaled by √(household size ÷ 2.4).
